PIANO

by John Mayson

Inspired by the artist’s lack of musical experience, the focus is not on how the piano works but on what it does – the creation of abstract audible landscapes in the mind of the listener where music uses different elements layered/interwoven to create the overall sound.

SCULPTURE

Nose to Tail Carpentry

A grand piano stands alone in the middle of open space. The bass keys are exposed and playable but at the treble end of the keyboard the ‘skin’ of the piano has been sand-blasted away to reveal an interior topography of the flesh, bones and sinews of the piano’s inner workings. Partial destruction references the historic fire in the market and nearby meat and fish stalls are also resonant with the visceral aesthetic of the piece.
